What was the last console you were really excited about? I think, maybe, as we grow older we lose something. The part of us that would get excited when we would take family trips to Six flags or Disneyland. The part that kept us up at night on Christmas eve or inclined us to invite our entire 2nd grad class to a birthday party at Chucky Cheese's. As we grow older, and become more cynical, more beat about the head and neck by our cold, cruel world, we lose that sense of excitement for....well...anything. Except maybe sex (and I know plenty of people who don't care about that anymore either)
Aside from the obvious Christmas and birthday examples, one place where this particularly manifests itself is the full-on console race (it's not a war) that will be happening through what appears to be 2007 now (Sony, I'm looking at you). But unlike the fan boy fueled fights between friends that caused quite a few black-eyes in my high school between the PlayStation and n64 factions, nowadays, I could really care less.
That's not to say I don't want a next-gen console, I really do, but it seems the childlike excitement is gone. And the harder I think about it, the less I care about getting one, especially for games. As of right now, the only thing I'd use a xBox 360 is for the media center functionality. So really, the only 'game' system I want is the Revolution, and i highly doubt I'll be waiting outside Gamestop at midnight for one of those.
But why is this? It seems everyone is affected by the Tim Allen syndrome, where more power = more funner, and I, myself, am not exactly a 'less is more' person, as i spent over $500 on my video card alone. So what is so unimpressive about the next-gen lineup? I think I can attribute my lack of school-girl giddiness to old age, but why my complete uninterest in the game functionality of 2/3 of the next generation console offerings?
One word. Crappy Games (stupid math) Where are the Super Mario 64's and the Halo's of this generation? The Animal Crossings and the Gran Trusimo's? Resident Evil? There has to be a killer app (or even the prospect of one) for the next generation of home entertainment consoles, and until one is set in stone (i.e. gold, pressed and sitting shrinkwraped on the self of Gamestop), I highly doubt I will be pickup up a next-gen console.
So it seems to me that the next generation console race has started out rather slowly, like a turtle derby, or the Special Olympics; and unless these turtles find some way to strap jet-packs to their shells, I'll stick to my Dual Xeon, Radeon X850 XTPE laden 2GB of ram totein' PC rig. At least I can always look forward to the next mage nerf on WoW.
